HOW IT ALL BEGAN!
CRUISE FOR A CAUSE started in October 2003 with an event named Cruisin’ for Brianne.
Steve and Barbara Mixter were watching the local news when a story aired about a 2-year old Seaford, Delaware girl who was in need of a kidney transplant. The girl's family was having medical problems and bills were piling up. Barbara, who herself had undergone a lung transplant the previous August, turned to Steve and simply asked, “What are we going to do about that?”
With that question, the idea of Cruise for a Cause was born.
The Mixters enlisted the help of their friends in the classic car hobby. Word spread, and three weeks later more than 50 classic cars and trucks were on their way to Seaford to deliver care packages and more than $5,000 in cash donations to the family.
This might have been the only cruising event of its kind if not for members of the hobby asking "when are we going to do this again?". That started an annual event.
Sadly in 2010 Barbara Mixter passed but the causes she believed in lived on. Cruise for a Cause has been through many changes in scope and location but will always follow its basic format of helping those of us who need our help the most. We are proud that over the past twenty years, the Wheels That Heal Car Club has spearheaded this event and taken it to heights Barbara and Steve never dreamed possible by donating many, many thousands to people in need
It is our hope that you will join us by helping families in need right here on Delmarva.
